Dave Announces He is Running for Reelection

 

Today, I am excited to announce that I am seeking reelection to the Folsom Cordova Unified School District Board of Education for District #3.

The journey we have taken together since I took office in December 2018 has admittedly had its challenges (including a pandemic) but despite these challenges we have been amazingly successful. My campaign slogan has and always will remain “OUR CHILDREN — OUR FUTURE” because our students’ interests need to be paramount in everything we do. And that slogan was how I approached every vote I have taken. With students being the focus, we will always be heading in the right direction.

SAMPLING OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS SINCE LAST ELECTION:

​

(1) Successfully advocated for the creation of a small high school option for students — Three Rivers Innovation Academy (TRIA) is tentatively scheduled to open in 2028. How small? Each grade at TRIA will be capped at 200 students.

​

(2) Advocated for increasing Career Technical Education (CTE) options for students at all secondary sites, including the development of new and innovative options coming to TRIA.

​

(3) Worked to enhance the partnership between FCUSD and Folsom Lake College, including starting the conversation on creating an Early College/Middle College program where students can graduate high school with both high school and associate’s degree diplomas.

​

(4) Created the “Screen Time Taskforce” that includes parents, medical professionals, and teachers that is charged with making recommendations to reduce the amount of time students spend online and looking at screens.

​

(5) Drafted new interdistrict and intradistrict transfer policies which were adopted to stop the overcrowding of our schools, especially Folsom High School.

​

(6) Expanded the district’s cell phone policy (which was the first in the region) to include our middle schools.

​

(7) Continually fought for additional academic programming and resources at Folsom High School.

​

(8) Advocated for the creation of the district’s first K-8 school at Riverview STEM Academy.

​

(9) Successfully fought efforts to eliminate School Resource Officers to ensure the safety of our students, teachers, and staff.

​

(10) Saved local high school stadium graduation ceremonies from being moved to Sacramento.

​

(11) Ensured school grounds remained open to the public during non-school hours.

​

(12) Adopted a revised policy to reduce school signage in order to be a good neighbor to the residents around our schools.

​

(13) Enhanced the fiscal foundation of the district through the creation of the Superintendent’s Budget Advisory Committee comprising parents, students, teachers, and staff which resulted in over $9 million in budget cuts in just its first year.

​

(14) Successfully advocated for the use of Value Cost Engineering Services to identify and eliminate wasteful spending practices in the development and renovation of schools. This effort has saved the district tens of millions of dollars in current and future savings.

​

(15) Purchased electric school buses to do our part in being good stewards of the environment.

​

(16) Started the effort to reimagine Rancho Cordova schools which has resulted in two facilities bonds being adopted by the residents of RC. This summer, construction of new state of the art library, math classrooms, and health and counseling offices have started at Cordova High School.

 

While I was going to also provide a list of accomplishments prior to the last election, I decided this post is long enough. But I would be happy to share them with you. Just IM/DM me.

WHAT’S NEXT?

​

Here are a few of my goals that I want to accomplish in the next four years if I am re-elected:

​

(1) Advocate for the creation of a K-8 school, similar to Riverview STEM, in Folsom.

​

(2) See the construction of the first phases of the new middle and high school in Folsom Ranch to continue reducing the overcrowding at Folsom High, Vista Del Lago, Sutter, and Folsom Middle.

​

(3) After the successful opening of TRIA, advocate for a second small high school with unique academic concentrations in Folsom. I am a firm believer that our comprehensive high schools are absolutely amazing . . . but they are not for everyone. Some students thrive better in smaller school settings.

​

(4) The adoption of the Screen Time Taskforce recommendations and future recommendations, including stop issuing Chromebooks to students.

​

(5) Decreasing the radius around schools where bussing is not provided. It is unacceptable to expect some students to walk 5-8 miles a day.

​

(6) Increasing reading and math scores in all demographics and at all ages, but especially among our vulnerable populations.

​

(7) Ensuring SAT and ACT testing options within the district.

​

(8) Retaining an independent auditor that reports directly to the School Board.

​

(9) Enhancing partnerships with the local business community.

​

(10) Continuing the fight for additional benefits and compensation structures for our teachers and staff who live in an exceedingly expensive state. You may have noticed an emphasis on finding savings within the budget in both what we have accomplished and my goals — the reason is part fiscal responsibility and part to find resources to better compensate and support the individuals who are educating OUR CHILDREN, OUR FUTURE.

 

After years of working in the policy trenches in education, I have appreciated the trust the voters placed in me over the last 8 years. We have accomplished so much but we have more left to do. FCUSD is already the top ranked district in the Sacramento region. Our goal should be for it to be among the top ranked districts in the nation. I would respectfully ask for your vote in November.
